What is your opinion on the true designer of the Harbor Bridge?
Sir Ralph Freeman and I had major roles in the building and the design of the harbor bridge. There has been a controversy about if Freeman had more input into the design and construction of the bridge than me. Even though I believe that my influence over Harbour Bridge was much more substantial, Freeman and myself would not have created the bridge we see today without each other. Of course, everyone will have a different opinion. My role in designing the Harbour Bridge was the Chief Proponent but Sir Ralph Freeman was the structural designer or, in other words, chose what the shape of the bridge was going to be. I oversaw the design and construction of the Harbour bridge. I was immensely proud of the Harbour Bridge when it opened in 1932 and know that at least I made an impact on Sydney, whoever may be credited for designing it.
What are your thoughts on the move from Queensland to Sydney?
Moving from Queensland to Sydney was a big change for me as there were many new things for me to adapt to. Although I was reluctant at first, moving to Sydney was a sensible choice for my career. In Sydney, I gained many new work opportunities which I would not have gotten in Queensland. They were far bigger and bolder than the trains back home. I also met lots of new people too, which helped me shape my career and projects. Even though the bustling city of Sydney was a very foreign place for me compared to the open land and nature of Queensland, I do think that it was an important and good choice for me.
